CHALICE

The gold chalice meant different things depending on the culture or religion. There are many representations of the chalice that are employed throughout history:

CHALICE OF BENEDICTION: The chalice occupies the first place among sacred vessels, and by a figure of speech the material cup is often used as if it were synonymous with the Precious Blood itself.

HOLY GRAIL (SANGRAAL): The Holy Grail has been part of the western European Christian tradition since the late 12th and early 13th centuries when it was first mentioned by a Cistercian named Helinandus (d. c.1230) who repeats the account of vision of a hermit in c.717 AD during which he was shown the dish used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.
