EGYPTIAN GOD AMON
THE HIDDEN ONE
One of the eight divine forces of chaos known as the Ogdoad.
Amon was worshipped as a local fertility god in Thebes which
is located in Upper Egypt. Amon became a national
deity in the Second millennium BC (New Kingdom) when kings
from Thebes came into power.
His name was connected together with that of the supreme
solar deity, Ra to create Amon-Ra. He was considered
one of the four great creator deities along with Atum,
Khnum and Ptah. Amon-Ra was the hidden power
who created the gods. The snake form of Amon was said to be
the earliest being to exist in the primeval waters.
The name Amon meant - "the hidden one", suggesting that
he once had been an invisible natural spirit of some kind.
He was thought of as "an invisible creative power which
was the source of all life in heaven, and on the earth, and
in the great deep, and in the Underworld, and which made
itself manifest under the form of Ra. He was thought to be self-made and was
part of the
old myths of creation. Texts from the Old Kingdom mention
him as connected with the force of life and tell about his
female counterpart who was named Amonet.
Because of his lofty position, many statues and temples
were erected for his cult and kings incorporated his name
into theirs. He was a good looking young man, simply dressed
and had two feathers he wore atop a red crown.
