EGYPTIAN - EYE OF HORUS
This is an ancient Egyptian symbol that signifies the
protection of the Sun's all-seeing eye. The symbol
represents the power of illumination. This is said to be the
eye of the Falcon Sky God Horus.
As an amulet, the Eye of Horus has three versions: a
left eye, a right eye, and two eyes. The eye is constructed
in fractional parts, with 1/64 missing, the special piece
Thoth added by magic. The Egyptians use this EYE symbol as a
protection against those with evil intentions. Worn as
jewelry fashioned of gold, silver, lapis, wood, porcelain,
or carnelian, the Eye of Horus is believed to ensure safety,
to protect one's health, and give the wearer wisdom and
prosperity. Some believe that the Eye of Horus can take on a
life of its own and will swoop down on anyone whose
intentions are evil.
Together, the eyes represent the
whole of the universe, a concept similar to that of the Taoist
Yin-yang symbol. Spiritually, the right eye reflects solar,
masculine energy, as well as reason and mathematics. The left eye
reflects fluid, feminine, lunar energy, and rules intuition and
magick. Together, they represent the combined, transcendent power of
Horus.

The Eye of Horus was believed to have healing and protective power,
and it was used as a protective amulet, and as a medical measuring
device, using the mathematical proportions of the eye to determine
the proportions of ingredients in medical preparations) to prepare
medications.
The Masonic all seeing eye, the Eye of Providence symbol found on
American money, and our modern Rx pharmaceutical symbol are all
descended from the Eye of Horus. Variants:
Oudjat, Udjat, Utchat, Wedjat.
Since I left you,
mine eye is in my minde,
And that which gouernes me to goe about,
Doth part his function, and is partly blind,
Seemes seeing, but effectually is out.
Shakespeare, Sonnet 113
