IRISH FAERIE QUEEN AEVAL

Among the Celts of Ireland, Aeval was the Fairy Queen of Munster. She held a midnight court to determine if husbands were satisfying their wives' sexual needs, or not, as the women charged. She deemed that men were both prudish and lazy, and commanded that they bow to the women's sexual wishes.

The name Aeval, also spelled Aoibheal or Aoibhell, is pronounced 'eeval'. The name literally means burning fire, which may have been a byword for the notion of ‘ardor’.

Variants: Aoibheal, Aebhel.

And the Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
Rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.
The snowdrop and then the violet,
Arose from the ground with warm rain wet;
And their breath was mixed with sweet odour sent
From the turf like the voice and the instrument.

Percy Blythe Shelley (1792-1822), The Sensitive Plant
