SCOTTISH GEANCANACH

Originated in Ireland and the Hebrides Islands of Scotland although the Irish version of the geancanach is vastly different than the Scottish. In Scotland, their element is fire and they are most active at night, and can be found around a blazing fire at your hearthside, however, in Ireland the gancanagh are considered a lazy, idle, "love talker" who bring nothing but bad luck.

The Scottish version of the geancanach is pixie-like in appearance. They are depicted as being very small (a few inches in height), with huge eyes that curve upward on the ends and large pointed ears. They also are known for their playful, if somewhat mischievous, smiles.

They have small wings which do not seem functional, and they appear to move from place to place by dematerializing and reappearing quite rapidly. They may be mistaken for flickering lights or lightning bugs

Geancanach are guardians of the home and hearth and crave the warmth of the fireside and are harmless. They are generally helpful and can be rewarded  with a large glass of fresh milk, however, they have a tendency to play pranks.

Variants: gan ceanach, gancanagh, ganconer, ganceann, love talker (Irish), geancanach (Scottish).
