SCOTTISH WILL O' THE WISP

A wisp of a fairy who appears at night in lonely places carrying a lantern. It uses this light to cause travelers to lose their way. Malevolent spirits either of the dead or non human intelligence. They were famed for luring unwary travelers into dangerous situations.

They were also the mysterious lights that were said to lead travelers from the well-trodden paths into dangerous and treacherous waters. This phenomenon is also known as Jack-o'-Lantern, the Hobby Lantern, or the Lantern Man. Often seen at night as a ghostly, flickering, light out over the marshlands, this could possibly be the result of spontaneous ignition of gases produced by dead plants.

The death-fires danced at night;
The water, like a witch's oils,
Burnt green, and blue and white.

Samuel Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
