Swaying Dancer (Dancer in Green), 1877–1879 |
- Pastel and gouache on paper. 64 x 36 cm
Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. - Degas combined pastel with gouache to build delicate color transparencies, crisp outlines, and the soft texture of fabric. - The scene is depicted from the unique, high-angle viewpoint of an upper side theater box, looking down onto the stage.
- The off-center framing, steep perspective, and sense of a frozen, fleeting moment were heavily inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and early photography.

A full-length ballerina in a vibrant green tutu is captured mid-pirouette or swift turn, while surrounding dancers are cropped at the edges. In the background, other ballerinas dressed in orange wait near a stage backdrop.
