ABEL GRIMMER - SEASONS  - PAGE 4 Cleopatra's Masonic Needle Not an Egyptian mystery - Cleopatra's Needle in New York City is one of a pair of obelisks, together named Cleopatra's Needles, that were moved from the ruins of the Caesareum of Alexandria, Egypt, in the 19th-century. - The Caesareum is an ancient temple conceived by Cleopatra VII of the Ptolemaic kingdom, the last pharaoh of Egypt. - Egyptian pharaoh Tuthmose III had two of the obelisks made in celebration of his 30 year reign. - Ramesses II added hieroglyphs to the obelisks nearly 300 years after they were created to celebrate the military victories of Ramesses II for the Temple of the Sun in Heliopolis in 1475 BC. It was secured in May 1877 by judge Elbert E. Farman, the United States Consul General at Cairo, as a gift from the Khedive for the United States remaining a friendly neutral as two European powers, France and Britain, maneuvered for political control of the Egyptian government. (Wikipedia) Egyptian sand - The two obelisks stood tall for centuries in Heilopolis, a remarkable enough monument that Pharaoh Ramesses II who had a habit of adding his own carvings to existing structures deemed them worthy of being a testament to his military victories around 1275 BC. - Centuries more passed before the two were toppled during an attack on Heliopolis by the Achaemenid Empire in approximately 525 BC, and then they spent centuries in the Egyptian sands, relatively well protected from the wind and sparse rain that might have weathered them. The Achaemenid Empire (c. 550–330 BCE), founded by Cyrus the Great, was the first superpower and largest empire of classical antiquity, spanning 5.5–7.5 million km² from the Balkans to the Indus Valley. Based in modern Iran, it was known for administrative efficiency, religious tolerance, and infrastructure like the Royal Road, before falling to Alexander the Great. (Wikipedia) Metropolitan Museum of Art Cleopatra Needle bronze crab - It wasn’t until 12 BC that the obelisks were raised again, this time a little over a 100 miles away in Alexandria. - The two were erected in the Caesarium, a temple built by Queen Cleopatra to honor either Julius Caesar or Marc Antony (the historical record is unclear), and it was here that the duo got the name Cleopatra’s Needles. - Cleopatra wasn’t responsible for the obelisks as they already existed for a thousand years before she was born. - It was also here that the obelisks gained the decorative bronze crabs at their bases, one for each of the four corners, which were inscribed in Greek and Latin with a record of their placement. Four bronze, crab-shaped sculptures (weighing ~922 lbs each) support the base of Cleopatra's Needle in Central Park, installed in 1881 as replicas of Roman-era supports. Budge speculated that the 1303 AD Crete earthquake was to blame, but what is known is that by the 17th-century AD the needles were a well known sightseeing stop for Europeans visiting Egypt, and continued to be for as long as they still stood in their native land. Until the beginning of the 19th century. British presence was heavy in Egypt, especially its military presence, and in 1819 the de facto ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, gifted the fallen obelisk to the British government in commemoration of the victories of Lord Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and Ralph Abercromby at the Battle of Alexandria in 1801. Though the Brits accepted the gift, they declined to move it for a number of years due to the cost of transportation. It wasn’t until 1877 that the obelisk was moved to London and erected on the Victoria Embankment. (Great Gotham Challenge) Checkered history - Cleopatra's Needles have had a checkered history. - Dating from 1500 BC, it was one of a pair of obelisks carved for Pharaoh Thutmose III and erected at Heliopolis, near modern Cairo, however, Augustus Caesar, a Roman, moved the two obelisks to Alexandria in 12 BC. - The obelisk in Central Park has Tuthmose III’s cartouche, or royal identification tag, signifying the royal family and high government officials. - On the obelisk is written in hieroglyphics words of acknowledgment to Amen Ra, Thoth, and Horus. - Amen Ra was the sun God and the center of divinity in Egypt. Museum piece - What spurred the move of the London obelisk almost 60 years after it was initially gifted was not a built up yearning for something promised long ago, but rather a fascination for Egypt the British had that in the 1870’s had reached an all time high. - Egyptomania had gripped the European elite, and all things Egypt were in vogue. - Everyone wanted their own piece of the ancient civilization, and that included pillaged grave goods, hieroglyphs chipped off of monuments, and even powered mummies. Public domain A cigarette card recounting the terrible tale of the London obelisk - Cleopatra’s Needles are London and New York’s cursed and haunted Egyptian obelisks. - To transport the 200-ton granite obelisk, engineers encased it in a specially constructed, 93-foot-long iron cylinder named Cleopatra. - The 3,500-year-old Egyptian obelisk in London, was feared lost at sea in October 1877, during its transport when a storm in the Bay of Biscay caused its cylinder-ship to become uncontrollable. - A rescue boat from the Olga was sent to save the crew of the Cleopatra, but it capsized, resulting in the death of 6 crew members and their names were inscribed on a plaque at the base of the needle. - The vessel was abandoned, but it did not sink; it was later recovered and the obelisk was finally erected on the Victoria Embankment in 1878. After repairs in Spain and a final towing by the tug Anglia, the obelisk arrived in the Thames estuary on January 21, 1878. The obelisk was finally installed in its current location in September 1878, where it still bears shrapnel damage from a 1917 German air raid. (Assistant) America - It was in this cultural climate that America, watching England claim its own obelisk, decided it wanted one too. - But also that the Egyptians gave it to the U.S. in exchange for funds provided to modernize Egypt. - Due to great interest in Egyptian objects in the 19th-century, sometimes called Egyptomania, major cities soon wanted obelisks for their own, acquired as though they were trophies of world conquest. - The obelisk in New York City is the only giant Egyptian obelisk in the Western Hemisphere. - Because our world is run by the Freemasons and Jews, not us. Packed for trip to London - In the same year that the first obelisk was transported to London, US consul-general in Egypt Elbert Farman began petitioning the Egyptian Khedive, Isma’il Pasha, to formally gift the second obelisk to the United States. - Isma'il was the grandson of Muhammad Ali, he gifted the obelisk in 1879 to honor the Civil War veterans serving in his army and to encourage good trade relations between the U.S. and Egypt after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Henry Honychurch Gorringe, a 19th Century naval officer, discovered an mountain range, brought Cleopatra’s Needle to New York and almost ended-up on a wildlife adventure with Teddy Roosevelt. His name is also one of the very few words in the English language rhyming with Orange. (Assistant) Freenmason funding - Gorringe documented this bold engineering feat and the obelisk's long but interesting journey in his book Egyptian Obelisks. - Shortly thereafter the Commissioner of the Department of Public Parks of New York, Henry Stebbins, began to organize funding for the monument’s move. - The petitioning efforts lasted over a year, during which time railroad magnate William Vanderbilt provided the majority of the funds needed, until the Egyptian government formally gifted the second of Cleopatra’s Needles to the U.S. on May 18th, 1879. Gorringe had to negotiate for, purchase, and repair the dilapidated ocean steamer Dessoug in Alexandria, load the obelisk, brave the Atlantic, build a track to transport the obelisk on land to the Central Park (the obelisk moved about 100 feet per day across 96th St to Broadway, south to 86th St, and east toward the park), then raise the monument into its assigned location. Greywacke Hill in Central Park - But how do you get a 240 ton object, the length of a 7-story building, across the Atlantic Ocean and propped up in New York's premier park which had just opened a few years before on a hill called Greywacke Hill? - This is about Gorringe's technique and the curious Freemasons ceremony that accompanied the debut of the obelisk's cornerstone. Farman, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Placing the Obelisk in the Hold of the Steamer Dessoug - A mere 38 days later, the SS Dessoug arrived in Staten Island, and the task of moving its cargo to Central Park began. - As was the case when it was loaded in, a hole was cut into the bow of the ship so that it could be removed, and cannonballs were used to roll the ancient Egyptian obelisk onto land. - After arriving in New York in July 1880, it was hauled by a team of 32 horses from the Hudson River to the east side of Central Park. - From there is was put on top of a specially built railroad trestle and brought into the park via steam engine. - It took a total of 112 days to move the obelisk through New York, and over 3 years since if left Alexandria. Slow journey - The movement of monument through the streets of New York took so long, about a block a day, that temporary shacks to sell candy to onlookers were moved along with the slow procession. - 50,000 spectators lined the route. - It took an agonizingly slow journey through the streets of New York City, being waylaid by blizzards and opportunists looking to chip away their own piece from the needle, until arriving at Greywacke Knoll on January 5, 1881. - First came the limestone pedestal, which was given a full Masonic cornerstone ceremony when it was placed on October 2, 1881, and then the granite masterpiece itself. Obelisks were primarily made of granite, specifically from quarries in Aswan, due to its immense durability, symbolic association with eternal life, and striking aesthetic quality. Granite allowed these monolithic structures to survive thousands of years, representing the sun god Ra and honoring kings, while its hardness conveyed permanence and strength. (Assistant) Capstone - The obelisk in Central Park was secured by Freemasons as a gift from the Khedive for the United States. - The Grand Master of the Masons of New York, Jesse B. Anthony, laid the cornerstone for the obelisk, just as the Masons were asked to do at most major constructions, including the Statue of Liberty. - Their Masonic ceremony drew in thousands of New Yorkers who watched as 9,000 freemasons marched in attire to the ceremony as a hymn was sung. - The obelisk itself was erected in Central Park in 1881 after the son of railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt; William H. Vanderbilt funded the entire project. The Central Park Obelisk is on top of boxes containing items from the late 1880s including a copy of the Declaration of Independence, a 1870s census, a set of military medals, the complete works of Shakespeare, coins, a hydraulic pump, and a guide to Egypt and Masonic emblems.There is also apparently a secret box that contains objects that were only known by the man who transported and raised the stone. When it was moved from Alexandria it was believed to be with items such as a perfect ashlar stone, a trowel, and a diamond-shaped aperture. (Great Gotham Challenge) Masonic reservoir - Another interesting alignment in the route, is the main branch of the public library on 5th avenue and 42nd street. - This was not the structure at that location in the 19th-century. - The Croton Distributing Reservoir was connected to the city’s aqueduct system in 1842 and was demolished in the late 1890s. - The reservoir was constructed when midtown was practically farmland. - It was a massive structure standing 50 feet high, with 25 foot think walls which held 20 million gallons of fresh water and it was also designed in an Egyptian motif which was inherently Masonic. A stele is a stone or wooden slab, generally taller than it is wide, erected in the ancient world as a monument. The surface of the stele often has text, ornamentation, or both. These may be inscribed, carved in relief, or painted. (Wikipedia) Brooklyn Museum and Wikimedia Commons Weathering - Egypt has repeatedly asked for the return of both Cleopatra's Needle obelisks, one in London and the other in New York. - This is primarily due to concerns about their preservation and a broader push for cultural heritage repatriation. - The weather and pollution of New York have taken a toll on the obelisk, designed for the desert as it was, and a number of efforts have been made over the years to protect the monument from weathering and erosion. - Some are trying to claim that most of the weathering occurred the first 4 years after the obelisk came to NYC so that doesn't justify returning it to Egypt. We would like to see the return of important objects to museums in Egypt," said Abdul Halim Nureldin, vice dean of Cairo University and former director of the Egyptian government's Antiquities Organization. (Wikipedia) Preservation - The first of these attempts to preserve the obelisk, conducted in 1885, involved waterproofing the granite with creosote-laced paraffin wax, a process that ended up damaging the obelisk and its engravings more than the 4 years of NYC winters combined already had. - Another effort in 1913 involved treating the stone with Tung oil, a substance which was known to be effective for waterproofing wood, but which washed right off the obelisk’s smooth sides. Most recently, conservation efforts by NYC Parks and the Met saw the monument cleaned with lasers, and fragile areas stabilized with adhesive compounds. But even with the most concerted efforts, the 143 years since the needle’s arrival in America have taken a greater toll on it than the three millennia it weathered in its homeland. (Great Gotham Challenge) Image from Famous Ankles Extreme weathering - In 2010, Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass sent an open letter to the Central Park Conservancy and Mayor Mike Bloomberg, promising that he would find a way to return the obelisk to Egypt if steps were not taken to improve conservation of the 3,485 year old object. - After Hawass threatened legal action if conservation doesn't improve, these requests have faced logistical and legal hurdles, with the monuments in both cities remaining in place. - The letter, along with the increasing desire for restitution of antiques and artifacts back to their homelands, has had many wondering if Cleopatra’s Needle really belongs atop Greywacke Knoll. Known as "Billy", he was the eldest son of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, an heir to his fortune and a prominent member of the Vanderbilt family. Vanderbilt became the richest American after he took over his father's fortune in 1877 until his own death in 1885, passing on a substantial part of the fortune to his wife and children, particularly to his sons Cornelius II and William. (Wikipedia) ManfredHugh, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons Emmet Obelisk - There are two other obelisks found in Manhattan, the first is the Emmet Obelisk located at Saint Paul’s Chapel built in 1766, the oldest continuously occupied structure in New York City. - The obelisk is located in the graveyard of the church and was dedicated to Thomas Addis Emmet who died in 1827. - He was born in Ireland in 1764 and was a supporter of Irish Independence and after he emigrated from Ireland he became a successful lawyer and was the NY State Attorney General briefly in 1812. - Emmet is actually not buried under the obelisk, but rather in St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery in the East Village. - St. Paul's Chapel is only a block away from the World Trade Center, and has become a memorial to September 11th. The obelisk was built in the 1830s, and supposedly has coordinates etched in the stone, although they are known to be slightly off. There are certain speculations that Thomas Addis Emmet was to be reinterred from a vault on St Marks to St Paul’s but his remains were never moved. (Assistant) Church steeple - The Emmet Obelisk, a granite obelisk a little over 30-foot tall, was designed in the 1830s in America and it was erected in 1833 through the efforts of Dr. William James MacNeven. - Emmet wasn’t a Mason but George Washington and Pierre L’ Enfant both were, and Washington himself attended this church and Pierre L'Enfant designed the church. - Pierre L’Enfant is also responsible for designing the linear streets of Washington DC and in an aerial view of the city there are Masonic symbols that can be readily seen. - The obelisk features a relief of Emmett's face below the pyramid top, and just below the base, a relief of an eagle grasping an Irish harp, an early example of this Irish-American emblem. There is also reportedly a chamber beneath the obelisk but nothing in the space.It serves as a tribute to a key figure in Irish-American history, often noted in discussions regarding historic, sometimes Freemason-related, monuments in New York. (Assistant) Beyond My Ken, CC BY-SA 4.0 , via Wikimedia Commons General William Jenkins Worth Monument - The third obelisk in Manhattan is in Worth Square and it is dedicated to General William Worth where he is laid to rest at the site because he was born in New York and is actually entombed under the structure. - General Worth was a famous military hero who fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), following America's annexation of Texas in 1845. - The war eventually established the border between America and Mexico at the Rio Grande. - The obelisk is located uptown on 23rd Street right beside Madison Square Park and the Flatiron building. - Designed by James Goodwin Batterson, the obelisk, made out of white marble, stands nearly 6 stories high next to Madison Square Park. The monument was built by James G Batterson. Batterson was contracted by Abraham Lincoln to build the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. He also constructed the Masonic Temple in New York City which is a block away on 6th Ave. (glasscapsule media archive) Cuban Mason - The Worth monument was dedicated on November 25, 1857, which was the anniversary of Evacuation Day, the day that the British departed from the American colonies. - William Worth was also a Freemason and Fort Worth, Texas, is named after him where he was First Lieutenant and Worth Street in Manhattan was named after him as well. - In 1848, Worth was approached by Cuban Freemasons called the Havana Club who wanted to overthrow the Colonial government there. - He was temporarily interred in Greenwood cemetery but then moved after the Obelisk and tomb were built. - A procession of 6,500 soldiers and a speech from the mayor took place when he was put into the tomb in 1857. (glasscapsule media archive) Park - There is also a lesser known obelisk erected in 1804, after the first Secretary of the Treasury was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, the city of New York mourned his death. - Alexander Hamilton's friends and family buried him under a white obelisk in Trinity Churchyard and Hamilton now rests in the heart of the Financial District. - The symbolic significance of the obelisk is something that has long been debated, however, most agree it has to do with the Earth's connection with the Egyptian sun god, Ra. - It's elongated form has been likened to a sun beam but is also a Masonic style phallic symbol. - The obelisk is topped with a pyramid that represents the first land that rose from the primordial waters of the universe, first discussed in one of the ancient Egyptian creation myths.
