- Karsten Solheim was a golf club designer and
businessman. He founded Karsten Manufacturing, a golf club
maker better known by the name of PING, and the Solheim Cup,
the premier international team competition in women's golf.
- He worked on the Fireball jet fighter plane as a flight research engineer in 1945, and later joined Convair as a project engineer for the Atlas missile's first ground guidance system.
- While working as a mechanical engineer at General Electric
in Syracuse, New York, in the early 1950s, Solheim was involved in developing portable televisions.
Invention: He is credited with inventing the adjustable, rabbit-ear antenna that became standard on these early portable sets.
- He rented the family home while my father was in dental
school at University of Buffalo and he nailed "grounding antenna" wire all
over the attic so now we know why.
