DAVINCI - MOON GLOW
The subtle light from the moon, just before
and after a new moon was first mentioned by DaVinci in the
15th century and as a
result is called 'DaVinci Glow' or 'Earthshine.'
We know more about the movement of the celestial
bodies than about the soil underfoot. (Leonardo
DaVinci)

Ashen moon glow
It is twice reflected sunlight, first by Earth
onto the lunar surface and once again into the eyes of the
viewer. The result is a thin ghostly glow on the bottom of the moon which can only be seen when a slim
crescent moon is visible close to the horizon during the first
few days and last few days of the moons's orbit of Earth.
DaVinci 'Glow' on Moon |
DaVinci believed that the glow was caused by
the ocean water reflecting off the surface of the moon,
however, current day scientists believe it is actually clouds
and sea ice (water?) that cause the ashen glow.
But everything exposed by the light becomes
visible--and everything that is illuminated becomes a
light. (Ephesians 5:13)

In folklore this phenomenon was called, either
the "new moon in the old moon's arms" (for a waning crescent
moon) or the "old moon in the new moon's arms" (for a waxing
crescent moon).
